Meow previously lived in the deserts of New Mexico, so it has had some cosmetic issues that I’ve always wanted to address. The interior chrome trim bubbling and the sticky plastic buttons were taken care of under warranty, but now it’s time to start on the exterior.

Here are a few before/after shots of the latest activity, repainting the front bumper (faded and sandblasted from driving in the desert) and side mirror caps (fading and delaminating).

This was just done at my local Maaco, which did a decent job and the owners are a lovely old retired-looking couple just having a good time. They did nick a piece of my window chrome trim, which I just discovered and will be calling them about tomorrow. Hopefully it’s a quick fix.

Next will be a single-stage paint correction and headlamp lens restoration.  I’ve also ordered a new grille chrome surround.

Single stage paint? Why tho?

Is Maaco any good?

you don’t mind it’s a different color?

In fact, the paint on the bumper and mirrors was significantly faded compared to the rest of the body. I wonder if it was cheaply repainted before . It’s now better matched .

The previous paint on the bumper and mirror caps definitely resembles single-stage. I wonder if they had been previously repainted for the same reason.

Maaco is fine. They’re a franchise, so your results will vary from location to location. These owners were a super nice older couple. I made some cost choices (not taking the bumper off ) simply because the car is a daily and lives outside anyway. These are sacrificial surfaces that will eventually degrade again with the rest of the car.

from my professional experience, the before shots are OEM finish.

edit* to add, the bumpers and mirrors were painted in a different location than the body using different materials when manufactured . Sometimes they can wear and appear different.

Why is the paint so much poorer on those plastic parts?

It’s honestly quite jarring that JLR would allow such a difference in paint quality. Thanks, good to know!

they all do it the same way, recent years are more consistent results. The 90's and 00's was the era it was most noticeable .
